Passport? Check!

43 days in Europe, begins today.

Holly and I squeeze down the aisle of the plane, our eyes roving across unfamiliar faces and rows of numbers as we search for our seats. Excitement bubbles in our stomachs, rushing through our veins, quickening the unsteady beat of our hearts. Anticipation has kept sleep at bay, but now it pushes against my eyelids as I settle into the cushioned window seat, adventure just within reach.

One continent, 13 countries, two 18-year-old girls. Well, not for long; Holly turns the promising age of 19 in just three hours, 35 000 feet above a black ocean and hurtling through a sea of stars. I, on the other hand, will have traveled 19 times around the sun in just one more month, add six days, in the magical streets of Paris, Disneyland. Spending the last sweet days of my 18th year exploring Italy, Amsterdam, Germany, the Swiss Alps- the list goes on..

When it came to the preparation side of things, packing may not have been at the forefront of my mind. Thankfully, my incredible, wordly  Grandma gave me a package full of the little things I need that may have slipped my mind (as well as knitting me a warm scarf that I’m sure will feature in many future posts). For anybody travelling overseas, I’m positive this list will come in handy.

  1. Moisturiser
  2. Earphones
  3. Travel Journal
  4. Stationary  (Kikki K felt pens are the way to go! I’ve also packed some Japanese washi tape for sticking in polaroids and ticket stubs.)
  5. Ribbon (Tying strands of ribbon around the handles of your suitcases  makes it 10x easier to spot them.)
  6. Small purse for cards and money
  7. Mints
  8. Duct tape (In case anything rips, duct tape has your back.)
  9. Antibacterial wipes/tissues
  10. Passport
  11. Entertainment (Something thin and light that won’t take up much room.)
  12. Soap (Not just to keep yourself clean, but your clothes as well. If you don’t have time or the resources to wash your clothes, a quick scrub with a bar of soap should do the trick.)
  13. Luggage tag
  14. Small mirror
  15. Hand lotion
  16. Itinery
  17. Phone
  18. Europe phrasebook & dictionary
  19. Laundry + pegs package + zip-lock bags
  20. Small notebook for on-the-go scribbles
  21. Camera
  22. Hand sanitiser
  23. Emergency poncho
  24. A wallet to keep your important documents secure in one place
  25. PawPaw ointment
  26. Band-Aids (considering Holly falls over on the daily- including down waterfalls and inflatable slides- I’m sure these will come in handy.)

Three hours ago we hugged our families goodbye, and now our plane rolls gently on the tarmac, wings lifting to prepare for its fourteen-hour race against the wind. Holly turns to me, smiling, as I whisper-

And so, the adventure begins.
